In contrast to the starched and brightly coloured polos introduced by big names like Ralph Lauren, Project E introduced a series of "vintage-distressed" polos as an "anti-preppy" alternative. Since the company was founded 18 years ago by Michael and Gina Hecht, Project e has evolved from a small mom-and-pop t-shirt operation, into a very successful line of men's polo tees. With nothing more than $5,000, considerable experience in the retail business, and a lot of ambition, the husband and wife duo first began by manufacturing and selling basic screen-print t-shirts. With a strong "preppy" influence on the rise since the late 90s, they eventually graduated to the production of polos, and saw their rather humble operation explode into a widely celebrated and well-established company.
Michael manages the sales and finances, while Gina heads the creative design and product development team. Meticulous about fit, fabric, and quality, Project e strives to produce innovative, style-conscious clothing, while also keeping in mind the value of quality. "We want to create that favorite, old, soft, comfortable shirt you can throw on and immediately feel good wearing," says Michael. "We always enjoy seeing someone wearing our shirts, and while the sales are very good, we are continually motivated by the validation we get in knowing that we have actually created something that people like and want to wear."
Project e has made incredible headway, and has become a fast favorite among fashionistas, stylists and celebrities alike. Their clothing often appears in magazines, popular sitcoms, movies, award shows, and even music videos. Fans of their product include Adrian Grenier, David Beckham, Collin Farrell, and Leonardo Dicaprio, just to name a few.
