Steven Slater, former Jet Blue employee

When I think of the name Slater, my first thoughts turn to A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez’s character on Saved by The Bell) and all the crazy antics that he, Zach, Screech and the rest of the Saved By The Bell gang got into that so thoroughly amused me as I watched the show on Saturday mornings. However, a new Slater has emerged as the reigning, most awesome Slater.

By now, everyone knows the story of Steven Slater and his triumphant resignation from his position as flight attendant for the Jet Blue airline. When the flight he was working on landed, one particular passenger stood up from his seat, attempting to remove his luggage from the overhead compartment, before the plane had made a complete stop. Slater repeatedly asked the passenger to stay in his seat, as per the safety regulations, at least until the plane had come to a firm stop. Instead of listening to Slater, the passenger proceeded to be very rude, yell multiple profanities at him and generally create a scene which ultimately ended in Slater getting hit on the head with the man’s suitcase as it fell from the overhead compartment.

Having finally had enough, Steven turned away from the excessively-rude passenger and walked over to the intercom where he said for all the plane to hear, “To the fucking asshole who told me to fuck off- it’s been a good 28 years. I’ve had it. That’s it.” Slater then activated the emergency exit slide, grabbed a few beers and slid out of the plane, smiling from ear to ear.

Since then, his story has become the latest internet craze. Over ten groups on Facebook are devoted to his awesomeness, with the official Steven Slater fan-page having over 100,000 members. Everyone who has ever worked in the customer service industry, in which rude patrons are inescapable, has fantasized about quitting their jobs in similar, dramatic ways. Steven Slater is a hero for all of us who could only dream of doing what he did.

Although Steven got arrested for his dramatic exit (he was allegedly grinning when the police arrested him) he proves that a working class hero is definitely something to be.

Good for you, Steven Slater. Good for you.

When I was eleven, I was more concerned with the fact that having to attend high school would impede my Sailor Moon-watching. Tavi was being interviewed by the New York Times.

As if the photo montage of my favorite movie characters’ bedroom weren’t enough to make me love her, Tavi’s “About Me” reads the following: Wears batman capes and oversized hats. Scatters black petals on Rei Kawakubo’s doorsteps and serenades her in rap. I wish I was Daria but I get too excited about things like candy to be deadpan all the time.

She’s wonderful.
